Once every three years, Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) at the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) holds an exhibition showcasing collaborations and collectives of more than 100 artists from 25 countries all over Asia, the Pacific and Australia – and it is hyped as the sixth Asia Pacific Triennial (APT6) series.

The said art exhibition aims to exemplify the diversities of cultures, perceptions and practices of the artists from countries such as Tibet, North Korea, Turkey, Iran, Cambodia, Myanmar and the Philippines among others. APT6 opened last December 5, 2009 and will run until the 5th of April this year.

Every art installation piece is remarkable as oftentimes how these artists convey their message, express their feelings and communicate their thoughts somehow give you a sense of comfort in this strange fusion of ideas. APT6 also feature performances in music and film for people to be able to explore, discover and appreciate cultural constellations.

Currently, artists are providing workshops for children aged three to 12 for QAG’s biggest event, the Kids APT Summer Spectacular. The ones stealing the limelight so far are the works of a Japanese artist Shinji Ohmaki, Minam Apang from India, Reuben Paterson from NZ and husband-and-wife team, Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan originally from the Philippines.

The Aquilizans are now working and living in Brisbane with their family and with the relocation and years of continuous transition and integration into a new set of values and cultural norms, they began focusing on communicating the feeling of detachment and the moving on process; the overwhelming emotions of finally making a step for change and traveling the globe. Their past exhibitions since 1997 up to present in Australia, Japan, Korea, USA and Singapore have the same theme.

For the APT6, they made an out-of-the-ordinary collection of tiny aeroplanes made out paddle-pop sticks that will more likely turn out to be a giant aeroplane when finally put together – they called this Connecting Flight. As for the Kids APT Summer Spectacular activity, participants are encouraged to design their own model aircrafts using those sticks and other recycled materials.

Father’s Day Gift Ideas

1. Watch – If most women would like to adorn themselves with jewelries, men only accersorize with a watch. It doesn’t really matter how many they’ve already got in their shelves like an array of collection, some men just can’t have too many of it.

2. Wine/Alcohol – Time to get his drink on to celebrate. Depending on his level of drinking, you can start chilling his favorite wine, brandy or scotch whisky – whatever suits his refined taste.

3. Sports Tickets – Every man has a favorite sport, that’s true. So check out what’s playing on Sunday, reserve a seat and watch it live together!

4. Electric Shaving Razor or Grooming Kit – If your Dad’s a busy body and doesn’t own a shaving razor yet, get him one. Or if he goes to business trips a lot, he needs to have his own grooming kit he can take with him anywhere.

5. Swiss Knife – Some people just have a sheer fascination with small and multi-purpose gadgets. And no, a gadget is not just a term used by techy people, this could also be this pocket-sized set of knives, scissors, nail file, screwdriver…and one like Victorinox Swiss Army even has a ballpoint pen attached on its end and a mini light on the other.

6. Salon/Facial Care/Spa Gift Certificates – Give them a time to relax and be pampered on their special day! The Regal Relaxation room at Richmonde Hotel offers an exclusive package for Fathers which includes overnight stay and spa/facial treatments for your parents for as low as Php4,400. Also, Soneva Spa in Tomas Morato offers to as much as 50% off on facial, body scrub and spa treatments.

7. A Family Trip to Somewhere - An ultimate break – rest and relaxation – is sometimes what most of us crave for. And since you celebrate it on a weekend, it would be best if you’d be able to be together as a family. Avail the special promotions at Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park in Cavite where they provide sports and recreational facilities. Fathers can get a gift pack at the Fishing Village and get a free round of beer when you check in on Father’s day and another during the happy hours from 7-9pm.

8. Lazy Boy Massage Recliner – Let’s admit it, everybody dreams to have this chair at our home or office. And if you can afford to shell out a minimum of 25k and above – this one would be perfect! It’s like having your own physical therapist to ease your aching muscles and vaporize the daily-incured stress.

9. Perfume – Keep them smelling good! Top picks would be L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme, Black Code and Acqua Di Gio by Giorgio Armani, Polo Sport by RL, Clinique Happy for Men, Touch For Men by Burberry. But of course, you know better!

10. A Letter – Most of the time, our Dads already have or can actually afford everything mentioned above and all they really need is for them to know how he’s been as a father and how much they are appreciated and loved. Sometimes, all they need is what money can’t buy – your time and love. So if you’re one of those who don’t have a perfect connection with your Dad or not really used to expressing your feelings in verbally – writing a letter would be so much better than nothing.

How about you? What do you have in mind?

After the race of Pinoys to scale Mt. Everest in 2006, the expedition team led by Leo Oracion and Edwin Erwin will take on another journey around the globe – this time, the plan is to sail on a 15×3 meters balanghai in 2010.

The balanghai, also known as balangay and Butuan boat, is the first water vessel that was excavated in Southeast Asia, serving as evidence to the craftsmanship of the early Filipinos in attempting to transport on water.

According to sources, 9 balanghais were exhumed in 1976 in Butuan
City, southern Philippines along with 50,000 archeological relics and cultural artifacts that were marked to have existed for two thousand years through carbon-dating process. Further research shows that this sailing vessel have been used by early Filipinos to travel through Southeast Asia, Polynesia and even Madagascar.

Due to its history, it drew interest among the group and was chosen to represent our country and most importantly, to prove that anything can be achieved with synergy and hard work.

Another news report says that,

The first phase of the voyage will be flagged off at Manila Bay on June 24, passing by Boracay and Mactan in Cebu, central Philippines, besides Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga, General Santos, Davao City and Siluag in Tawi-Tawi in the southern Philippines.

In 2010, the team will retrace the ancient Southeast Asian trading routes and aim to pass the Micronesian nations and Madagascar by 2011 before venturing into the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans by 2012. The team plans to be back in the Philippines by 2013.

via Gulfnews

The balanghai modeled after the first unearthed boat in Butuan will commence to push off this month and the team will be accompanied with the best experienced master sailors in the country along with other key persons to make everything possible.
